A nice machine the Fujitsu S7010. Showing it's age a bit (at the time of writing), this model is being pulled apart here to repair a loose connection on the power socket. Nothing new - similar tech tips cover the same problem on other makes of laptop whereby constant connection/disconnection of the power supply wears out the solder joints.

As usual, the obligatory disclaimer:
Unless you're a dab-hand with a screwdriver, don't attempt any of this. Messing around inside your computer could cause damage and in certain cases can be hazardous to your health. This page is just a guide - you follow these instructions at your own risk. You should be careful handling the internals of a computer and follow anti-static precautions or you may cause damage.


Step 1: Remove the screws that hold the hard drive and memory covers in place and pop the covers off. Also remove the battery.

Step 2: Pull the black plastic tabs to disconnect the hard drive and remove the drive from the laptop. Use the lever to remove the optical (CD/DVD) drive. The memory does not need to be removed.

Step 3: Undo the eleven case screws. These screws are identical apart from the one labelled 'A' which is smaller than the rest (remember this when reassembling!)

Step 4: Undo the two case screws.

Step 5: Undo the three screws that hold the button panel fascia in place.

Step 6: Lever up the two clips on the rear of the button panel fascia with a small flat-blade screwdriver (be careful - these clips are fragile and easily break off)....

Step 7: ... and carefully prise the button panel fascia up. Unplug the speaker connection to remove the panel completely.

Step 8: Lift up and remove the keyboard. It is held in place with an adhesive backing and so may require some gentle persuasion. Unplug the keyboard ribbon cable as you remove the keyboard.

Step 9: Undo the screw holding the metal shield over the WiFi card and lift the shield out of the way.

Step 10: The WiFi card can now be disconnected from it's white (aux) and grey (main) antenna cables and removed.

Step 11: Pull the insulating sleeve from the black antenna wire and disconnect the antenna coupling underneath.

Step 12: To remove the LCD panel, disconnect the signal cable ('A') and pull the disconnected WiFi antenna cables free. Undo the two screws on the left side (arrowed)....

Step 13: ... and undo the two screws on the right side. The LCD panel should now be free and can be removed.

Step 14: Undo the three screws on the underside of the laptop just inside of the optical drive bay.

Step 15: Undo the casing screw next to the LCD signal connector.

Step 16: Disconnect the trackpad ribbon.

Step 17: Remove the front casing.

Step 18: Undo the five shielding screws (arrowed red) and disconnect the ribbon cables for the LCD status panel and button panel (arrowed green).

Step 19: Unscrew the two hex posts on the VGA connector.

Step 20: The sheilding can now be removed.

Step 21: Disconnect the USB/IrDA board from the motherboard.

Step 22: The motherboard can now be eased out of the lower casing.

Step 23: Flip the motherboard over to reveal the power socket connectors. Renew the arrowed solder joints if you have dry-joint (intermittant power) problems.

Reassembly is the reversal of these instructions. Be careful when fitting the motherboard back into the lower case assembly - make sure the WiFi switch is correctly located with the case!
